Coco-Zen - Fair Trade Certified Chocolate Truffles

Our Story

Beginnings

Coco-Zen came about when new mom and chocoholic, Joyce Kushner, decided to take a break from the frenetic pace of retail marketing to stay at home to care for her newborn son. During maternity leave, Joyce spent her 45-minute "breaks" while her son napped making chocolate desserts. It turned out that experimenting with chocolates (and tasting them!) helped Joyce maintain her post-partum "tranquility."

Chocolate truffles being her favorite, Joyce soon developed several "harmonious" flavor combinations and gave them away to family and friends (while extolling the wonders of a little daily chocolate indulgence). As it turned out, the truffles were a hit. So deciding to take a chance, she said goodbye to corporate America and went into business for herself.

Thus, Coco-Zen was born - spreading the joy of chocolate "enlightenment" one truffle at a time.

Philosophy
At Coco-Zen, we believe that all living things are connected - that all our actions not only affect ourselves but also the world around us.

As a chocolate company...
We believe that we should not only strive to create the best chocolate treats, but in doing so, consider how we affect those who grow the cocoa and the land from which it comes. Because of this, we use only organic and Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate in our truffles. In fact, all of our chocolate treats are Fair Trade Certified™, and we are currently working towards organic certification.

As a retailer...
We are conscious of the impact that packaging and marketing materials have on the environment. Whenever available, we print on post-consumer recycled paper. Our Bulk Truffles are packaged in recyclable kraft corrugated boxes, and our packaged truffle containers are designed to be reused as well as recycled. In our shipment boxes, we use packing material made from recycled cardboard (no styrofoam peanuts here!).

As a business...
We realize that there are many simple things we can do to minimize the effects that running a business has on our beautiful planet - from "powering up" with renewable energy via renewable energy certificates (RECs), to "powering down" during non-business hours; from reusing the back side of printer paper, to avoiding paper usage by communicating and storing information electronically.

As members of a larger community...
Finally, we understand the importance of reaching out to help and work together with others. We're linking up with social and eco-minded businesses. We're supporting and contributing to environmental organizations. We're sharing all the planet & people friendly "stuff" we find. While we believe that an individual can make a difference, we know that, together, many can bring about great change.

These are just a few examples of our efforts to run a planet & people friendly business. While we hope to have made steps in the right direction, we continually look for more ways and new ideas to accomplish this goal.
